What We Need
March 1, 2016

Pastor Tim Keller used the following example in a sermon to show how to find ultimate joy and satisfaction in Christ:

“Do you remember when your mother used to say, "Don't eat candy before meals?" Why did she say that? Because she knew it would ruin your next meal. The trouble with eating candy is that it gives you a sugar buzz, and then you don't feel hungry. Candy masks the fact that your body needs proteins and vitamins. The sugar buzz from candy masks your hunger for the real nutrients that you don't have.”

In the same way the things of this world like money, possessions, sex, power, etc., mask our hunger and thirst for God.  While we think our needs are being met, we are slowly dying of thirst, much the same way a person marooned in an ocean drinks saltwater that is actually lethal.  The things of this world can never satisfy.

Isaiah 55:1, 2 says “Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you who have no money come, buy and eat.  Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.  “Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your wages for what does not satisfy?  Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, And delight yourself in abundance.”

Only God can ultimately satisfy our soul’s thirst and hunger for meaning and significance.  We were created to thrive in our relationship with Him. How are you trying to quench your soul’s thirst and hunger?  Are you sure your soul is thriving?  Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on Him while He is near.”  (Isaiah 55:6, 7)
