Offering Meaning and Value
May 9, 2017

Donald Miller in his book Blue Like Jazz suggests that the followers of Jesus should make sure that they walk their talk.  Miller writes, “I used to say that I believed it was important to tell people about Jesus, but I never did. [My friend] Andrew very kindly explained that if I do not introduce people to Jesus, then I don't believe Jesus is an important person. It doesn't matter what I say.” [1]  James the brother of Jesus said in his book in the Bible, “Your behaviour is a reflection of what you truly believe.” [2]

On their way to temple for prayer, Peter and John stopped to chat with a lame man.  They had witnessed Jesus’ healings and were convinced that they could make a difference in meeting the man’s needs.  “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.”[3]  Then in full confidence, Peter took the man by the right hand and helped him get up.  Instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong.

How aware are we of the needs of our communities?  Just because people have their physical and financial needs looked after, does not mean that things are working out emotionally, mentally or even spiritually.  What would it be like for us to step out of your comfort zone and into the lives of others with offerings of mercy and compassion provided by Jesus; giving words of affirmation and encouragement; offering light and life.  Believers are a powerful source for light, life and strength in community.  People are looking for meaning, significance and security.  We can enter in with the power and grace of Jesus and offer people life, hope and meaning.  Who around you would benefit from hope and life today?  What steps can you take to bring them that offer of life?
